The cello concerto was Elgar's last major work and represents the peak of his technical and musical mastery. The first movement opens unusually with a striking recitaitve passge for the cello before settling into a more conventional main theme. The other movements include a scherzo,a poignant adagio and a more light-hearted final movement, all portraying Elgar's unmistakable melodic and harmonic style and an authority which came with his increasing age and maturity.

This is one of the best-loved repertoire pieces for cello and this version for cello and piano was transcribed by the composer.
